November – Lunch Break Challenge Top Four:

by on Nov.30, 2014, under Fiddzy's Artwork, Studies & Sketches

November was a change of pace month. After spending the first four months of this challenge drawing primarily animal studies, and after coming out of October which contained quite a few sketches I’d sooner forget, I decided that I’ll spend a month away from the wildlife and instead concentrate on a bit of self indulgence sketching of some of my favourite fictional characters. Like normal I’ve included allot more than my top four, however two of these where drawn specifically to be included within the sets they are shown in below.

Naruto Shippuden - Team 8November Sketch 01 – Team 8

Following on directly from where I left off in October, my first batch of sketches once again looked the Naruto Team 8 characters of Kiba Inuzuka, Shino Aburame and Hinata Hyūga (who I left out last time due to her drawing having far too many mistakes). However this time I’ve attempted to draw their older Shippuden portrayals and am personally really pleased with the results, considering them my best Anime/Manga drawings to date. However I still feel that Hinata is the weakest of the three and as such I will be focusing on learning to accurately draw female characters allot more in the future, as for me drawing woman is a far greater challenge than drawing men for some reason.

GrootNovember Sketch 02 – Groot

(Here comes some ego rubbing) While it may not be 100% perfect I will admit that I am very proud of this Groot speed sketch. I absolutely love this character and his design and sketching him here was an absolute pleasure. This image also holds a special place because not only did it kick start this months trend of adding in small splashes of colour into each sketch but It also managed to smash (and still maintain at the time of posting) my Instagram “Like” record, a record coincidently held by my raccoon studies from way back in August. However it was not all smiles and sparkly pollen, I did attempt to post this sketch along with a drawing of baby Groot and Rocket Raccoon, however both sketches encountered issues giving me a firm reminder that there’s still lots to learn and ways to improve.

Godzilla'sNovember Sketch 03 – Godzilla’s

My final themed drawing set of the month was of these three Godzilla sketches, with each Godzilla representing one of his designs from the original three film era’s the Showa, Heisei and Millennium era’s. They where not intended to be colour studies, as such the little hints of colour where just their to help make them standout and have a bit more life in them. I quite enjoyed drawing these three as it allowed me to continue my character month theme whilst also incorporating a touch of animal/beast.

Red PandaNovember Sketch 04 – Red Panda

Speaking of animals this final sketch of a red panda was my only non fictional character illustration of the month and actually one of my all time favourites. Done as a bonus experimental piece one weekend this panda, drawn with ball point pens and office highlighters, is one of my first true colour studies done as part of this Lunch Break challenge and is another piece I really enjoyed drawing. It has also set the standard for next month where I once again intend to primarily look at animal anatomy studies.

Battery Life:

Chub ConductorChub Conductor

The Chubs are a race of soft, cube shaped, biological machines originating from an alternative universe to our own. Originally created by a mysterious race known only as the Farmers, a race famed for their bio-mechanical creations and hordes of living machines. The Chubs where originally created as living batteries, able to supply power as an individual unit or form together and act as a single generator. Like most of the bio-mechanical creations produced by the Farmers the Chubs where alternatively designed to be fully independent living creatures, even to the point where they could reproduce. Their face like patterns resembles shifting emoticons portraying the Chubs mood and they could move around independently by bouncing or rolling. Despite their living status they where programmed to do their job as batteries and had little individual intelligence. However an unintentional glitch meant that when enough units formed together their networked minds would merge to form a fully sentient hive mind. Noticing this and respecting the life they had created the Farmers freed the Chubs from all programming shackles and where even given their own homeworld, the Chub Domain. Even with their freedom many of the hive minds where still happy to do their original purpose. In our own universe it has been made illegal on many worlds to import them as escapees can cause chaos with many considering them vermin. When left to their own devices they can form complex societies and take on a variety of forms to suit their needs. Despite their soft bodies each Chub has enormous strength, able to happily stack up to twenty high, allowing them to build their autonomous forms.

Chub Conductor - Stages

Chub Conductor Development Stages

Like what I did with my previous piece, the Lancer Snails, here with the Chub Conductor I have also taken snapshots from each critical stage to record and visually present my works development.

Semi-Fun Fact: The blue pickaxe is a direct reference to the Diamond Pickaxe from Minecraft, a game that helped influence the Chubs final block-like form.

The Poala of Prema Zan:

Poala SentinelA Poala sentinel riding its Quadclaw Walker

Designed to be a truly alien race the Poalaare a species of sentient telepathic crystalline lifeforms. Able to create organic nano robots fully under their control. The Poala use this natural asset to build their technology and expand their telepathic powers for which they use to communicate, with both organics and machines. Naturally slow moving at inches a day, they further use their mental powers to control their technology in combination with their nano’s, utilising special robotic walkers known as Quadclaw Walkers to traverse vast distances at speeds considered the norm by most other species. While they have complete mastery over computers an extremely rare few can use their powers on organics, luckily the most an average Poala can accomplish is to read peoples minds, but only with considerable concentration.

Prema ZanThe Poala on Prema Zan

In addition to designing the PoalaI also wanted to design their homeworld, Prema Zan, a rocky world exposed to the vacuum of space, portraying another trait the Poala possess. Inspired by the new concept of dwarf planets (Plutoids), I decided to base the design of Prema Zan on the real world dwarf planet Ceres, a dwarf planet found in our solar systems asteroid belt. Stylistically I took a slightly more cartoony approach with these artworks.

Ancient Gods & Monster Seagulls:

by on Aug.13, 2009, under Aliens & Monsters, Character Design, Costume Design, Creature Design, Fiddzy's Artwork, Prop & Technology Design, Robots & Cyborgs, Sentients

Continuing my self directed Kaiju project I have designed three further monster characters inspired by Japanese cinema. Like the Leeton, these three Kaiju where designed to look both realistic yet silly and to have an appearance of a man in a suit. I was heavily inspired by the notion of them being reflected as ancient gods.

Pharaoh Zorrtic Pharaoh Zorrtic

The giant cyborg Pharaoh Zorrtic is the ruler and protector of the Zorrtic people, a race of Anubis-esque humanoids.

King Tooby IIKing Tooby II

This giant and vastly powerful golem has the appearance of an animated stone statue, but is infact a highly advanced robot. The successor and “son” of the legendary King Tooby I, King Tobby II awaits on his “fathers” throne at the Grand Palace of Tooby on Umbequarn IV.

Gulmar MutantGulmar Mutant

With large hollow sacks in their torso connected to their hands via tube-like flexible arms a Gulmar can act like monstrous vacuum cleaner, with both the ability suck objects into its body, then fire them back out again at extreme velocities. Standing at an already Frightful 7 foot a rare genetic deformity can sometimes double that turning your average Gulmar into a giant. Yet while its even rarer to get a Gulmar taller than that, dozens of ancient legends and myths tell of ones colossal enough to destroy a skyscraper.

Semi-Fun Fact: The name Gulmaris a cross between Gull and Fulmar, two seabirds that reflect its bird like head. It is also one of my favourite creature designs too date.
