November – Lunch Break Challenge Top Four:

by on Nov.30, 2014, under Fiddzy's Artwork, Studies & Sketches

November was a change of pace month. After spending the first four months of this challenge drawing primarily animal studies, and after coming out of October which contained quite a few sketches I’d sooner forget, I decided that I’ll spend a month away from the wildlife and instead concentrate on a bit of self indulgence sketching of some of my favourite fictional characters. Like normal I’ve included allot more than my top four, however two of these where drawn specifically to be included within the sets they are shown in below.

Naruto Shippuden - Team 8November Sketch 01 – Team 8

Following on directly from where I left off in October, my first batch of sketches once again looked the Naruto Team 8 characters of Kiba Inuzuka, Shino Aburame and Hinata Hyūga (who I left out last time due to her drawing having far too many mistakes). However this time I’ve attempted to draw their older Shippuden portrayals and am personally really pleased with the results, considering them my best Anime/Manga drawings to date. However I still feel that Hinata is the weakest of the three and as such I will be focusing on learning to accurately draw female characters allot more in the future, as for me drawing woman is a far greater challenge than drawing men for some reason.

GrootNovember Sketch 02 – Groot

(Here comes some ego rubbing) While it may not be 100% perfect I will admit that I am very proud of this Groot speed sketch. I absolutely love this character and his design and sketching him here was an absolute pleasure. This image also holds a special place because not only did it kick start this months trend of adding in small splashes of colour into each sketch but It also managed to smash (and still maintain at the time of posting) my Instagram “Like” record, a record coincidently held by my raccoon studies from way back in August. However it was not all smiles and sparkly pollen, I did attempt to post this sketch along with a drawing of baby Groot and Rocket Raccoon, however both sketches encountered issues giving me a firm reminder that there’s still lots to learn and ways to improve.

Godzilla'sNovember Sketch 03 – Godzilla’s

My final themed drawing set of the month was of these three Godzilla sketches, with each Godzilla representing one of his designs from the original three film era’s the Showa, Heisei and Millennium era’s. They where not intended to be colour studies, as such the little hints of colour where just their to help make them standout and have a bit more life in them. I quite enjoyed drawing these three as it allowed me to continue my character month theme whilst also incorporating a touch of animal/beast.

Red PandaNovember Sketch 04 – Red Panda

Speaking of animals this final sketch of a red panda was my only non fictional character illustration of the month and actually one of my all time favourites. Done as a bonus experimental piece one weekend this panda, drawn with ball point pens and office highlighters, is one of my first true colour studies done as part of this Lunch Break challenge and is another piece I really enjoyed drawing. It has also set the standard for next month where I once again intend to primarily look at animal anatomy studies.

Rubber, Bone, Rubble, Snow – The Calcibus:

by on Mar.01, 2014, under Aliens & Monsters, Character Design, Creature Design, Fiddzy's Artwork, Prop & Technology Design, Sentients

Out of all the drawings I’ve done over the course of this Blog there’s one creature design that I absolutely love revisiting, the Calcibus. Originally designed as nothing more than a simple minded magically conjured golem, I later re-imagined them as their own race and have slowly been expanding on their mythology ever since. Here shows the four Calcibus designs I’ve developed to date, the Rubber, Bone, Rubble and Snow Calcibus, along with a far more in-depth explanation about the races unique physiology and ancient history.

The CalcibusThe Calcibus

Each individual Calci is nothing more than a minute ball of almost pure energy, not much bigger than a speck of dust. At this stage they seemingly live for one goal, to find others of their kind. As small swarms of Calci begin to build they start to cluster towards the centre of the group forming their collective hive mind, a hive mind that eventually builds large enough to take on the persona of single collective presences known as a Calcibus. Not only does this Calcibus have the collective intellect of the billions of Calci that make it up, but also the effects of each individual Calci’s personal anti-gravity field, an aurora that on mass has the power to lift colossal weights  and suspend them in the air to build up a protective shell around the central swarm. This shell, often composed of whatever is found around it, is not only used as mobile shelter and means of protection but also to help give the Calcibus a physical form. To help maintain and suspend their shells without too much strain on the hive minds concentration, the Calcibus once having reached a critical mass creates “lifeless” drone Calci known as Supporters. These Support Calci help bolster the total anti-gravity field of a Calcibus without superseding the natural limit of intelligent Calci a single hive mind can support before dangerous split personalities begin to form. The Support Calci can also be “programmed” to perform tasks not only autonomously but also remotely. This means that the Calcibus can use the Supports to do monotonous and unintelligent jobs, such as keeping a pillar afloat, without wasting any of its overall brain power. Additionally these Supporters can do their jobs without rest and little upkeep. While the standard Calci do require rest, regularly rotating shifts within the swarm, it has long been a mystery how or even if they require sustenance. Most Calcibus carry a reserve of minerals, normally metals and crystals, deep within their core where they are slowly broken down, however this appears to be used more in the creation of Supports than culinary purposes. They mostly communicate with each other through luminescence and murmuration, but can also use vibrations to mimic speech. Thanks to their unique abilities the Calcibus are a much revered, often miss understood and sort after race. Thankfully their defensive and intimidating powers have helped prevent exploitation and their civilisation has become one of the galaxies most thriving.

Unsurprisingly the Calcibus and the Calci that form them are not a natural race, instead they are an extremely advanced engineered lifeform, created by an individual known only as Kaleem the Ancient Sphere of Configuration. While much of their early history is kept secret, It is known that they were originally created by Kaleem as labourers to help protect and care for the elderly entity. It is said that when he saw that his creations had developed beyond mere servants he freed them to pursue independent lives and build their own civilisation. Despite being free the Calcibus continued to care for Kaleem, building their culture around him where he has became regarded as a god and leader. Since freeing the Calcibus Kaleem lapsed into a coma like hibernation, only ever awakening from his slumber once every two hundred years for a few days to check his creations progression. Despite revering him as a god, they known that he is infact a highly evolved alien, a fact he regularly reminds them off. However aside from that and the fact that he is most likely the last of his kind nothing else is known about him or the race he belongs to. Although it is theorised that the ancient cities of their homeworld Cheljm in which Kaleem took shelter may have been cities belonging to his ancestors.

Before the Thaw – The Snow Calcibus:

by on Feb.21, 2014, under Aliens & Monsters, Character Design, Creature Design, Environmental Designs, Fiddzy's Artwork, Prop & Technology Design, Sentients

Originally planned in the run-up to Christmas, the Snow Calcibus was pushed back and over taken by the rendering of the Common Eye of Darn. In addition to the development of my newest “Universe 77” literature based project revolving around the artwork created here on my Blog, a project I will be continuing to build upon and posting about over the course of the year.

Snow CalcibusSnow Calcibus

The traditional and most recognisable Calcibus shells are those made from natural rock, stone rubble, dirt and dead wood. However a continuing trend, particularly amongst “younger” newly formed hive minds, is to venture away from the traditional materials and forms for more diverse and often outlandish shells, seeking uniqueness from other hives. This trend has emerged to help tackle the identity crisis Calcibus often face as the Calci that collaborate together to build the Calcibus hive mind, regularly die off and shift between hives causing its core personality to be continuously in flux. By constructing a unique personalised shell they can keep some sense of stability and easily recognisable identity. It has become one of the biggest cultural shifts in Calcibus history and has evolved into the formation of various subcultures within Calcibus society. Some of these subcultures such as the dreaded Bone Calcibus cult have become a bane to Calcibus society and feared by the wider galaxy, whereas the Christmassy Snow Calcibus of Winter Wonderland are a subculture cherished, particularly by Humans.

The Snow Calcibus of Winter Wonderland, on the planet Reunila, where originally travelling merchants and craftsmen visiting the predominantly Human world for trade. Eventually some decided to setup shop and a small population of Calcibus soon built up. Like all Calcibus they built their body shells out of whatever they could find around them and for the Calcibus of Winter Wonderland that was almost exclusively ice and snow. However unable to prevent the snow from melting under heat they would often layer the snow over an inner brick shell, this meant that even if the snow thawed they would still be protected. The whimsical look was an instant success amongst the dominant Human population who affectionately nicknamed them “Snow Golems”. During the Christmas period the Calcibus joined the Humans in their celebrations by incorporating festive decorations onto their shells. This fast became a sight indicative to Winter Wonderland and is helping the isolated mining world build its reputation as a viable colony thanks to increased outside interest in the planet and its unique Calcibus population.

Hells Oasis:

by on Feb.07, 2013, under Creature Design, Environmental Designs, Fiddzy's Artwork, Landscapes, Sentients

Although fresh from Photoshop this newest piece, the Puppet Leech, is infact the oldest design featured to date on this blog, not in terms of completion but in the appearance of creature itself. This demotic mummified totem is a reimagining of a creature I actually first drew way back in my early teens, a creature that for reasons unknown has just stuck around in my mind waiting to be redrawn.

Puppet LeechPuppet Leech

One of the many myths that surround the Puppet Masters is that they can never feel fear for they are fear personified. This would appear to be true as a Puppet Master uses fear as its primary weapon to attack the mind of its victim, mentally breaking them apart layer by layer so as to ensnare their bodies and pull them into their dimension to feast off the energy that they used to exist. However unknown to anyone but themselves there is one thing they truly do fear, the Puppet Leeches. A cult of renegade Puppet Masters who remain in our dimension and instead feed off the essence of their Puppet Master brethren. However just because they’d rather cannibalise their own kind does not make them any kinder to us, infact their psychopathic nature makes them far worst.

I am not entirely happy with the final outcome of this piece, I feel it looks quite flat and the composition is all wrong. However I do like the mythology behind the design and that is something I wish to continue and develop upon in the future.

Snow & Lights:

by on Dec.26, 2012, under Beasts, Creature Design, Environmental Designs, Fiddzy's Artwork, Landscapes, Prop & Technology Design

Seasons greetings! While getting into the festive spirit I could not resist taking a short break from my current project, (that I aim to upload within the new year) and instead design something more fitting for this chilly and wondrous time of year.

Reulan Winter WispsReunilan Winter Wisps

The Reunilan Winter Wisps from the chilly world of Reunila are a small but numerous species composed almost entirely of energy. Living for just under two Reunilan years (425 Earth days), the wisps spend the majority of their lives underground attached to the tree roots of Reunila’s northern forests. There similar to a fungus they feed off decaying matter, breaking it down into nutrients for the trees themselves. It is only when the wisps “flower”, during their second and final winter that they actually become visible, leaving the soil as floating balls of energy surrounded in a thin silken shell, which has the appearance of glistening crystalline ice. In this stage they live for no longer than three days as they “dance” in any available ray of light within forest clearings and over frozen ponds and marshes, searching for a mate with which to breed. Their floating bodies are extremely cold, so much so that they can actually chill the air around them, creating beautiful ice crystals that glimmer in their wake and deterring all but the most specialised of predators. There are fables that tell of times of when they was once so numerous that they turned night into day and dragged winter into spring.

The planet of Reunila is a small world located on the frontiers of the Human domain, and almost always covered in ice and snow even at the peak of its summer. These conditions were not favourable to the desert dwelling species that first scouted the system and as such largely ignored Reunila in favour of the systems easier to mine mineral rich moons and asteroids. When Humans arrived they were permitted to settle on the planet establishing a small collection of towns in Reunila’s Northern hemisphere, where the wisps native range lies. Thankfully the wisps seem unaffected by the Human presents and are increasing seen swarming within populated areas, lured in by the street lights.

The Bacteria that Blocked Out the Moon:

by on Nov.17, 2012, under Beasts, Creature Design, Environmental Designs, Fiddzy's Artwork, Landscapes, Prop & Technology Design, Sentients

Ah feels good to be drawing again, and to shake off the rust this first piece was all about experimentation in colour, lighting and form. Drawn pretty much on the fly its not exactly turned out how I originally envisioned, yet I am still very pleased with the outcome regardless. So here I introduce you to the Star Egg…

Star EggStar Egg

Many a spacer will tell you the legends of the Star Eggs, colossal beings so rare and illusive that almost nothing is truly known about them. With a central core of over a kilometre in diameter, it was long thought that the Star Eggs where some form of biomechanical space probe spent out by an unknown civilisation, however in truth they are actually living creatures in their own right, infact trillions upon trillions of individual organisms living together as a single symbiotic lifeform. So far with the few poor quality samples collected over five thousand individual species have been detected to comprise the collective form of a Star Egg, with estimates speculating that there could be well over double that in total. composed of an extremely diverse collection of mostly microscopic multi and single-celled organisms, no as of yet discovered individual symbiote has been bigger than a centimetre. What’s even stranger is that no single Star Egg appears to have the same composition making their study even harder. Based on the documented behaviour patterns the general consensus is that the comprised intelligence of a Star Egg is that of sentience, however all attempts at communication have failed. Despite this rumours of the Star Eggs showing interest in other lifeforms is common, with reports of them mysteriously scanning and even hacking lone spaceships and stations, although whether their intentions are merely out of curiosity or potential hostility remain unknown. How they evolved, where they come from and even how they traverse space with such ease and speed are all still unknown, along with countless other questions.

Reanimated Rubble:

by on Feb.12, 2011, under Aliens & Monsters, Character Design, Creature Design, Fiddzy's Artwork, Sentients

The Rubble Calcibus, is not a new design but rather a re-imagining of a golem design done well over a year ago when I first started this blog (Conjurer & the Conjured). The spark which triggered this re-imagining was from my more recent golem inspired creations, the Rubber Golem & the Bone Calcibus, plus my desire to see just how far my skills have developed since them early sketches and what areas still require improvement.

Rubble Calcibus / Stone Golem

The Rubble Calcibus, also known as the Rubble or Stone Golem, is the final hive mind form of Calci (a gravity altering race of colonial microscopic entities) found inhabiting the many ancient ruins and dungeons of their homeworld, Cheljm. Typically taking on the form of a humanoid consisting of broken statues, masonry and quarried stone, the Rubble Calcibus bears a remarkable resemblance to the mythological golems and as such these mysterious creatures have acquired many myths of their own. Most famously its is said that they are the undying guardians of hidden treasure’s and riches from a long lost archaic civilisation.

Modern Mythology, Rise of the Plastic Age:

by on Jul.30, 2010, under Aliens & Monsters, Character Design, Creature Design, Fiddzy's Artwork, Sentients

The Rubber Golem

The Rubber Golem is a mysterious modern elemental, that first appeared locked inside a shipping container full of the rubber ducks which make up the vast majority of form. Its origins and creation are entirely unknown, with many sometimes wild theories explaining as to how it got in the container to start with and from where it gained its lone space hopper head piece. The current leading theory is that this golem is in actuality just a renegade swarm of Calci, and that its proper definition should be the Rubber Calcibus. Since its first appearance the Rubber Golem has completely vanished, becoming nothing more than a modern myth, with only the occasional rubber duck left in an obscure location to remind the world of its presence.

The Eclectic Graveyard:

by on Jul.07, 2010, under Aliens & Monsters, Beasts, Character Design, Creature Design, Fiddzy's Artwork, Sentients, Studies & Sketches

Bone CalcibusBone Calcibus / Bone Golem

The Calci are a colonial race of microscopic semi-corporeal entities that gather together in the trillions to form the Calcibus, a powerful hive mind which acts as a single voice for the colony, and as such is often viewed by others as an individual entity. In addition to this the Calcibus has the power to incorporate inanimate objects into its body, to create a projective shell for its occupants, and as means of further interacting with the corporeal world. Dozens of myths surround the Calcibus, with many cultures mistaking them for ancient golem or paranormal entities and spirits with rumours that the feared Bone Calcibus are demonic guardians of the underworld. In truth these skeletal wielding Calcibus are often members of a dark Calci cult which believe other lifeforms should be their thralls and hosts. Thankfully the cult is small and isolated, with the greater Calci civilisation being fundamentally peaceful and respectful of other lifeforms and their remains.

The design and inspiration of the Calcibus came form some recent animal skull studies I had been doing over the last month (which I‘ll post at a latter date), as well as the mythology of the golem.

Demonic Translucent Ooze – Turoktune:

by on May.05, 2010, under Aliens & Monsters, Beasts, Character Design, Creature Design, Fiddzy's Artwork, Sentients

The design of this gelatinous demonoid, the Turoktune, was born as an experimental piece focusing on highlight rendering and translucency.  Like my other most recent designs I have also thought up a backstory for these vicious underworld sirens to help expand upon their design.

A “Human” Turoktune

The Turoktune are a mysterious species of unknown origin found in the dark back allies and under layers of the luxurious casino metropolis’s world of La Raxi. They stalk and kill anyone foolish or drunk enough to enter the cities long abandoned lower levels, and even though the authorities “officially” deny their existence they are believed to be responsible for thousands of missing person accounts. While no one is believed to have meet a Turoktune and survived, it is rumoured that they lure in their prey with a mesmerising light display which emanates from chemical reactions within their translucent skin, captivating any creature with the ability of sight, creating an irresistible, hallucinogenic and provocative spectacle. They then consume their transfixed prey, incorporating their bones and memories into their own. This ability to steal its victims memories can turn a Turoktune from a mindless hunter into a sentient assassin. It is unknown how much of an impact its victims memories can have an a Turoktune’s psyche, however it appears that they remain detached from any emotional bonds carried over, either through suppression or from a general lack of understanding towards higher emotions such as compassion.
