Reanimated Rubble:

The Stone Calcibus, is not a new design but rather a re-imagining of a golem design done well over a year ago when I first started this blog (Conjurer & the Conjured). The spark which triggered this re-imagining was from my more recent golem inspired creations, the Rubber Golem & the Bone Calcibus, plus my desire to see just how far my skills have developed since them early sketches and what areas still require improvement.

Stone Calcibus / Rubble Golem

The Stone Calcibus, also known as the Rubble or Stone Golem, is the final hive mind form of Calci (a gravity altering race of colonial microscopic entities) found inhabiting the ancient ruins and dungeons of their homeworld, Cheljm. Typically taking on the form of a humanoid consisting of broken statues and stone, the Stone Calcibus can bear a remarkable resemblance to the mythological golems and as such these mysterious creatures have acquired many myths of their own, most famously that they are the ancient guardians of hidden treasure’s and temples. This has lead them to gain another more whimsical name, “The Bouncers of the Past”.

Corvid Cosmonauts:

Zear Zip & Zear TarkZear Zip (Left) & Zear Tark (Right)

The idea behind the piece was to design two different yet closely related sentient species, here shown in the form of the Zear Zip and Zear Tark, two not very sentient looking bird species, hence the necklace! I wanted their names to sound as if pronounced by the birds themselves, similar to how birds like the Chiffchaff or Cuckoo have Onomatopoeic names derived from the sounds they commonly make.

After drawing the Zears I started to think about how they may live and what their homeworld might look like. Focusing on the Zear Tark my concept was that they would live in large communal nests, similar to a bee hive or dove cote, built from the ground up with mud and sticks like a House Martins nest cup. This giant mud structure would then be used as a towering vertical city, which would dominate the surrounding savannah landscape. In contrast I would like to imagine that the Zear Zip would instead stick more to the forests and mountains, living in smaller tribal roost’s.

Kaiju Wars – Mutant Mulood vs. Ba’Bate:

Mulood vs BaBate Mutant Mulood vs. Ba’Bate

A slightly more experimental piece, this battle scene was originally drawn as a very rough pencil sketch then scanned into Photoshop were it was coloured,  edited and sharpened. This piece features the Mulood “Fungus Creeper”, a creature originally designed as a dungeon dwelling, blood sucking, demonic beast, rather than a city stomping Kaiju. However I liked the design of the Mulood so much I decided to reuse it again here, labelling it as a mutated version of its kind. The Fungus Creepers monster rival, shown here as a veiny spiked leg, is a monster known as Ba’Bate who I intend to design fully at a later stage.

Conjurer & the Conjured:

These two illustrations came from the urge to incorporate more magical and fantasy-esque elements into my designs, plus my desire to play with texture and lighting. Originally intended to go together in a single piece with the mage summing his golem creation, in the end I split them into the two separate illustrations shown here.
