Rubber, Bone, Rubble, Snow – The Calcibus:

Out of all the drawings I’ve done over the course of this Blog there’s one creature design that I absolutely love revisiting, the Calcibus. Originally designed as nothing more than a simple minded magically conjured golem, I later re-imagined them as their own race and have slowly been expanding on their mythology ever since. Here shows the four Calcibus designs I’ve developed to date, the Rubber, Bone, Rubble and Snow Calcibus, along with a far more in-depth explanation about the races unique physiology and ancient history.

The CalcibusThe Calcibus

Each individual Calci is nothing more than a minute ball of almost pure energy, not much bigger than a speck of dust. At this stage they seemingly live for one goal, to find others of their kind. As small swarms of Calci begin to build they start to cluster towards the centre of the group forming their collective hive mind, a hive mind that eventually builds large enough to take on the persona of single collective presences known as a Calcibus. Not only does this Calcibus have the collective intellect of the billions of Calci that make it up, but also the effects of each individual Calci’s personal anti-gravity field, an aurora that on mass has the power to lift colossal weights  and suspend them in the air to build up a protective shell around the central swarm. This shell, often composed of whatever is found around it, is not only used as mobile shelter and means of protection but also to help give the Calcibus a physical form. To help maintain and suspend their shells without too much strain on the hive minds concentration, the Calcibus once having reached a critical mass creates “lifeless” drone Calci known as Supporters. These Support Calci help bolster the total anti-gravity field of a Calcibus without superseding the natural limit of intelligent Calci a single hive mind can support before dangerous split personalities begin to form. The Support Calci can also be “programmed” to perform tasks not only autonomously but also remotely. This means that the Calcibus can use the Supports to do monotonous and unintelligent jobs, such as keeping a pillar afloat, without wasting any of its overall brain power. Additionally these Supporters can do their jobs without rest and little upkeep. While the standard Calci do require rest, regularly rotating shifts within the swarm, it has long been a mystery how or even if they require sustenance. Most Calcibus carry a reserve of minerals, normally metals and crystals, deep within their core where they are slowly broken down, however this appears to be used more in the creation of Supports than culinary purposes. They mostly communicate with each other through luminescence and murmuration, but can also use vibrations to mimic speech. Thanks to their unique abilities the Calcibus are a much revered, often miss understood and sort after race. Thankfully their defensive and intimidating powers have helped prevent exploitation and their civilisation has become one of the galaxies most thriving.

Unsurprisingly the Calcibus and the Calci that form them are not a natural race, instead they are an extremely advanced engineered lifeform, created by an individual known only as Kaleem the Ancient Sphere of Configuration. While much of their early history is kept secret, It is known that they were originally created by Kaleem as labourers to help protect and care for the elderly entity. It is said that when he saw that his creations had developed beyond mere servants he freed them to pursue independent lives and build their own civilisation. Despite being free the Calcibus continued to care for Kaleem, building their culture around him where he has became regarded as a god and leader. Since freeing the Calcibus Kaleem lapsed into a coma like hibernation, only ever awakening from his slumber once every two hundred years for a few days to check his creations progression. Despite revering him as a god, they known that he is infact a highly evolved alien, a fact he regularly reminds them off. However aside from that and the fact that he is most likely the last of his kind nothing else is known about him or the race he belongs to. Although it is theorised that the ancient cities of their homeworld Cheljm in which Kaleem took shelter may have been cities belonging to his ancestors.

Before the Thaw – The Snow Calcibus:

Originally planned in the run-up to Christmas, the Snow Calcibus was pushed back and over taken by the rendering of the Common Eye of Darn. In addition to the development of my newest “Universe 77” literature based project revolving around the artwork created here on my Blog, a project I will be continuing to build upon and posting about over the course of the year.

The traditional and most recognisable Calcibus shells are those made from natural rock, stone rubble, dirt and dead wood. However a continuing trend, particularly amongst “younger” newly formed hive minds, is to venture away from the traditional materials and forms for more diverse and often outlandish shells, seeking uniqueness from other hives. This trend has emerged to help tackle the identity crisis Calcibus often face as the Calci that collaborate together to build the Calcibus hive mind, regularly die off and shift between hives causing its core personality to be continuously in flux. By constructing a unique personalised shell they can keep some sense of stability and easily recognisable identity. It has become one of the biggest cultural shifts in Calcibus history and has evolved into the formation of various subcultures within Calcibus society. Some of these subcultures such as the dreaded Bone Calcibus cult have become a bane to Calcibus society and feared by the wider galaxy, whereas the Christmassy Snow Calcibus of Winter Wonderland are a subculture cherished, particularly by Humans.

The Snow Calcibus of Winter Wonderland, on the planet Reunila, where originally travelling merchants and craftsmen visiting the predominantly Human world for trade. Eventually some decided to setup shop and a small population of Calcibus soon built up. Like all Calcibus they built their body shells out of whatever they could find around them and for the Calcibus of Winter Wonderland that was almost exclusively ice and snow. However unable to prevent the snow from melting under heat they would often layer the snow over an inner brick shell, this meant that even if the snow thawed they would still be protected. The whimsical look was an instant success amongst the dominant Human population who affectionately nicknamed them “Snow Golems”. During the Christmas period the Calcibus joined the Humans in their celebrations by incorporating festive decorations onto their shells. This fast became a sight indicative to Winter Wonderland and is helping the isolated mining world build its reputation as a viable colony thanks to increased outside interest in the planet and its unique Calcibus population.

Battery Life:

Chub ConductorChub Conductor

The Chubs are a race of soft, cube shaped, biological machines originating from an alternative universe to our own. Originally created by a mysterious race known only as the Farmers, a race famed for their bio-mechanical creations and hordes of living machines. The Chubs where originally created as living batteries, able to supply power as an individual unit or form together and act as a single generator. Like most of the bio-mechanical creations produced by the Farmers the Chubs where alternatively designed to be fully independent living creatures, even to the point where they could reproduce. Their face like patterns resembles shifting emoticons portraying the Chubs mood and they could move around independently by bouncing or rolling. Despite their living status they where programmed to do their job as batteries and had little individual intelligence. However an unintentional glitch meant that when enough units formed together their networked minds would merge to form a fully sentient hive mind. Noticing this and respecting the life they had created the Farmers freed the Chubs from all programming shackles and where even given their own homeworld, the Chub Domain. Even with their freedom many of the hive minds where still happy to do their original purpose. In our own universe it has been made illegal on many worlds to import them as escapees can cause chaos with many considering them vermin. When left to their own devices they can form complex societies and take on a variety of forms to suit their needs. Despite their soft bodies each Chub has enormous strength, able to happily stack up to twenty high, allowing them to build their autonomous forms.

Like what I did with my previous piece, the Lancer Snails, here with the Chub Conductor I have also taken snapshots from each critical stage to record and visually present my works development.

Semi-Fun Fact: The blue pickaxe is a direct reference to the Diamond Pickaxe from Minecraft, a game that helped influence the Chubs final block-like form.

Animal, Mineral, Vegetable?

This whimsical pot clad creation came from a simple sketch drawn while thinking up new idea’s for future Calci golem designs (Bone, rubber, stone), and my own personal interest in the biology of the Portuguese man o’ war, a colonial organism made up of not one individual species, but several, known as zooids. It was this idea of a symbiotic relationship among two distinct species, as well as a species relationship with an external non-organic structure, as seen in my Calci golem designs, which lead to this alien oddity, the Klingting.

The Klingting is not one, but two drastically different species living in a symbiotic relationship that together form a single colonial organism. The two creatures that make up an individual Klingting are, the Kling, a bulbous fish like animal with two arm-like eye stalks, and the Ting, a green gelatinous slime mold decedent.

Both species survive together in a perfect state of mutualism. The Kling provides all the benefits of a complex organism, such as, sight, the ability to communicate and in the case of the Kling, sentience, all of which is shared through a neural bond between the two. It also provides the Ting with food in the form of its waste and a special sugar it excretes. The Ting in turn provides the Kling with a liquidity home, a means of terrestrial mobility, a boosted immune system and further protection from its ability to form inorganic shells. If separated both will eventually die, although the Kling can sometimes survive if it finds a body of suitable water.

The Klingting communicate with each other by drumming on their inorganic shells, hence their onomatopoetic name Klingting.

Reanimated Rubble:

The Rubble Calcibus, is not a new design but rather a re-imagining of a golem design done well over a year ago when I first started this blog (Conjurer & the Conjured). The spark which triggered this re-imagining was from my more recent golem inspired creations, the Rubber Golem & the Bone Calcibus, plus my desire to see just how far my skills have developed since them early sketches and what areas still require improvement.

Rubble Calcibus / Stone Golem

The Rubble Calcibus, also known as the Rubble or Stone Golem, is the final hive mind form of Calci (a gravity altering race of colonial microscopic entities) found inhabiting the many ancient ruins and dungeons of their homeworld, Cheljm. Typically taking on the form of a humanoid consisting of broken statues, masonry and quarried stone, the Rubble Calcibus bears a remarkable resemblance to the mythological golems and as such these mysterious creatures have acquired many myths of their own. Most famously its is said that they are the undying guardians of hidden treasure’s and riches from a long lost archaic civilisation.

The Rubber Golem

The Rubber Golem is a mysterious modern elemental, that first appeared locked inside a shipping container full of the rubber ducks which make up the vast majority of form. Its origins and creation are entirely unknown, with many sometimes wild theories explaining as to how it got in the container to start with and from where it gained its lone space hopper head piece. The current leading theory is that this golem is in actuality just a renegade swarm of Calci, and that its proper definition should be the Rubber Calcibus. Since its first appearance the Rubber Golem has completely vanished, becoming nothing more than a modern myth, with only the occasional rubber duck left in an obscure location to remind the world of its presence.

The Eclectic Graveyard:

Bone CalcibusBone Calcibus / Bone Golem

The Calci are a colonial race of microscopic semi-corporeal entities that gather together in the trillions to form the Calcibus, a powerful hive mind which acts as a single voice for the colony, and as such is often viewed by others as an individual entity. In addition to this the Calcibus has the power to incorporate inanimate objects into its body, to create a projective shell for its occupants, and as means of further interacting with the corporeal world. Dozens of myths surround the Calcibus, with many cultures mistaking them for ancient golem or paranormal entities and spirits with rumours that the feared Bone Calcibus are demonic guardians of the underworld. In truth these skeletal wielding Calcibus are often members of a dark Calci cult which believe other lifeforms should be their thralls and hosts. Thankfully the cult is small and isolated, with the greater Calci civilisation being fundamentally peaceful and respectful of other lifeforms and their remains.

The design and inspiration of the Calcibus came form some recent animal skull studies I had been doing over the last month (which I‘ll post at a latter date), as well as the mythology of the golem.

Demonic Translucent Ooze – Turoktune:

The design of this gelatinous demonoid, the Turoktune, was born as an experimental piece focusing on highlight rendering and translucency.  Like my other most recent designs I have also thought up a backstory for these vicious underworld sirens to help expand upon their design.

A “Human” Turoktune

The Turoktune are a mysterious species of unknown origin found in the dark back allies and under layers of the luxurious casino metropolis’s world of La Raxi. They stalk and kill anyone foolish or drunk enough to enter the cities long abandoned lower levels, and even though the authorities “officially” deny their existence they are believed to be responsible for thousands of missing person accounts. While no one is believed to have meet a Turoktune and survived, it is rumoured that they lure in their prey with a mesmerising light display which emanates from chemical reactions within their translucent skin, captivating any creature with the ability of sight, creating an irresistible, hallucinogenic and provocative spectacle. They then consume their transfixed prey, incorporating their bones and memories into their own. This ability to steal its victims memories can turn a Turoktune from a mindless hunter into a sentient assassin. It is unknown how much of an impact its victims memories can have an a Turoktune’s psyche, however it appears that they remain detached from any emotional bonds carried over, either through suppression or from a general lack of understanding towards higher emotions such as compassion.

Opinnanite Version 2.0:

At the end of January I uploaded a piece called “Cave of the Opinnanite”, that featured a clan of large sentient purple gastropods, I named the Opinnanite, living in their subterranean home. Painted as an experimental colour piece to help improve my digital rendering skills, I was never truly happy with its final outcome, especially when it came to the purple slime monsters themselves. Knowing I could of pushed their design further I decided it was time for a redesign, resulting in the Opinnanite version 2.0…

For the redesign I focused more on its form and structure, trying to create a more believable creature (well as believable as a slime monster can be), with more life and character. The biggest change was the face, this time giving it a more humanoid appearance, rather than the originals dim-witted, blobfish inspired face. I also wanted to push its gastropod biology, giving it an even more fluid appearance, almost as if it was made from sludge. Finally the World War II helmet and grenade where more of an aesthetic fun touch, used to help show the creature as a sentient character, rather than a slimy pile of purple biomass.

Sentient Space Vermin:

The two creature designs below came from the work produced for this weeks conceptart.org Creature of the Week (C.O.W) contest, C.O.W #169 Beautiful Rebirth. The aim of this contest was to pick a monster from fiction that has or might off scared you, then redesign it as a cute and beautiful creature. For my entry I picked the small yet deadly aliens from the Critter film series, a race of hairy, toothed and ugly murderous alien rodents.

This first image was my entry into the C.O.W Beautiful Rebirth contest. Taking the Critter alien and merging it with hamster like qualities to give it a cuter more innocent appearance, then imagining what it would be like to take it and give it a makeover, with pink candyfloss like hair giving it embedded beauty while still keeping the essence of the creatures unpleasant nature.

Liking the design so much this second image was a redesigned version of my C.O.W entry, used to create my own horrid alien rodent, the garbage eating Krytammer.

For many species living on a world used as a galactic dumping ground for old battered spaceships and satellites sounds like hell, but to the Krytammer their homeworld of Ninni-ninu is paradise. The reason for this is that to the Krytammer and all other indigenous life on Ninni-ninu, having spaceships fall out of the sky is completely natural, infact its been going on for so many millennium that life has managed to evolve to not only survive but also thrive on the decaying derelicts. For the Krytammer it has shaped them into industrious scavengers, which when combined with their fast breeding patterns often mislabels them as vermin, especially when they get offworld.
